Reef fishes
UAE and Gulf of Oman
Technical Updates and Corrections
(Update: May 2007)
Page Species Number
57 10206 Lutjanus bengalensis - It has been pointed out to me that the stripes
of the specimen shown differ somewhat from those of other specimens from
other areas. The Oman photo may depict a different form, or species.
It is under investigation.
64 10409 Plectorhinchus schotaf - The author is able to confirm that this species is
common in the area around Abu Dhabi, in the Arabian Gulf.
85 12341 Pomacentrus arabicus - The author is able to confirm the presence of this
species around Abu Dhabi.
85 12346 Pomacentrus trichourus - The author is able to confirm the presence of this
species in the Arabian Gulf, observed off Abu Dhabi.
111 14207 Amblyeleotris maculata is incorrect. Some taxonomists retain the name A. wheeleri
and others refer to this species as A. fasciata (Randall, Reef and Shore Fishes of the
Southern Pacific, 2005). Until we have consensus, we use the name A. wheeleri.
112 14308 Dartfishes are now placed in their own family Ptereleotridae. Microdesmidae now
contains only the wormfishes. (Thacker, 2000 followed by Randall, 2005)
104 13708 Helcogramma steinitzi is incorrect. It should be Enneapterygius hollemani
('Smithiana' Journal, August 2005 by Wouter Holleman, whose name this species
takes - in this Journal the same photo as used in 'Reef Fishes' is used to describe
E. hollemani)
114 14802 The picture may not be of S. canaliculatus - the photo is from southern Oman and
seems to show fewer pale spots than would be expected - an expert on rabbitfishes
suggests that what is shown is S. sutor, which has fewer spots and a deeper body. If so,
the photo shows the first record of S. sutor in Oman - it has to date only been recorded
from East and South Africa.
106/107 14132/3/6 The genus Coryphopterus should revert to Fusigobius. (Winterbottom et al)
120 16502 Aluteres is incorrect. The genus is Aluterus.
123 16704 Author should be Lacepède, 1798
